My Perfect Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Today is National Grilled Cheese Day! You didn’t think I could go the whole day without acknowledging that did you?

If you know me, you know that I am a huge grilled cheese lover. I grew up on grilled cheese sandwiches. I ate them every night for dinner for years and years of my life. I went through multiple phases where I Β ate a grilled cheese for dinner every single night (and I mean back to back to back – I am a person of habit!).

A grilled cheese is my ultimate comfort food. It also brings back memories of my Grandpa – my ultimate cheese loving partner. We shared many grilled cheese sandwiches together. I know he’s smiling down and eating one in heaven today :).

People have their own ideas of the perfect grilled cheese. Some like them simple, some like them fancy, some like them with soup, some like them with cheddar cheese and so forth. My perfect grilled cheese is two slices of bread, buttered on both sides, with two slices of American cheese inside and pan-fried to golden perfection. I know American cheese is processed, but for me, it’s the only way to make an exceptional grilled cheese sandwich. I do enjoy other kinds of grilled cheese sandwiches, but that’s my favorite. And there are ways to make a grilled cheese healthier, but I’m a grilled cheese purist.

I think a grilled cheese sandwich is too simple to really create a recipe for, but if you want to celebrate this great national holiday and make my perfect grilled cheese sandwich – this is how I do it!

Butter both sides of each slice of bread (use good bread, not Iron Kids).

Heat an oiled pan to medium high heat and put two slices of American cheese between the bread slices. I like to fold and tear my cheese to ensure adequate coverage :).

Cook on each side for 2-4 minutes, until golden brown.

Slice and enjoy!

  1. Umm, this post makes me happier than any post I’ve read tonight! I adore grilled cheese; it’s my favorite sandwich, hands down. And I completely agree with you: American cheese is where it’s at. I don’t care that it’s processed; it melts better than any other variety! Did you know that Horizon Organic (sold at Whole Foods) makes an organic, less processed version that tastes just as good (dare I say, better) than Kraft? πŸ™‚

      Thanks πŸ™‚ I did not know that! I’ll have to try it. It’s funny you said that because in anticipation of National Grilled Cheese Day, I actually googled and tried to see if there were a less processed and/or healthier American cheese that I could use but I didn’t find anything. Next time!
