When it comes to snacking, one unhealthy habit that many people have is not drinking enough water. I used to be someone who rarely drank water. Three things helped me change this bad habit. First, I started working out more often. When you work out, you generally need water both during and after your workout. This helped me get in an extra bottle every day. The second thing that I found helped me to drink more H20 was buying a nice water bottle and filling it up throughout the day.
If you keep a water bottle with you, chances are you’ll drink water more often. It also helps you know how much water you’re drinking. For example, I know that I should drink about 3 of my Sigg bottles a day (it’s 0.6 liters). And did you know that bottled water does not taste any different than regular water? If you’re interested, I found a funny article about the surprising secrets of buying bottled water. Siggs come in all sorts of colors and cute patterns too, so what are you waiting for?!
The third thing I did that helped me drink more water was that I stopped drinking diet soda.
And I should preface that by telling you that I used to be pretty addicted to Diet Coke. I drank 3-4 cans per day. One day, I had a coffee in the morning instead of a diet coke, and then I drank water throughout the day. I was actually amazed at how easy it was, and at how much easier it was to drink the recommended amount of water if you aren’t drinking all that soda! After that, I just stopped drinking soda. It was that simple. I still have one on occasion, and I mean like once a month, but other than that I’m soda free . There are no good reasons to drink diet soda and plenty of reasons not to. So stop drinking it and drink more water!
And here’s another good drink for you! I promised to share some recipes of my favorite homemade healthy snacks this week. One snack that tops my homemade list is a spinach smoothie. If you haven’t heard of the whole green monster smoothie idea, adding spinach to your smoothies is becoming very popular and you cannot taste the spinach at all if you use the right ingredients! It’s a great way to sneak in a veggie throughout the day and it’s a delicious snack. This is my current favorite recipe, but you can really use any kind of flavored greek yogurt and fruit (though frozen ripe bananas are the best because they add sweetness and creaminess). If you use plain greek yogurt, I would suggest adding a little sweetener such as agave nectar or honey.
Scrumptious Spinach Smoothie
- 6 oz Chobani Rasberry yogurt (any flavored greek yogurt will do!)
- 3/4 – 1 cup milk
- 1 frozen banana (chopped)
- 2 handfuls of fresh spinach, or 1/2 cup frozen spinach
- chia seeds, optional
1) Put all ingredients in a blender, or immersion blender, and blend until smooth.
2) Add more milk if the smoothie is too thick.
3) Drink up!
*One of the best parts about making these smoothies often is you never have to waste a banana again! When your bananas get to their peak ripeness, just cut them into a few pieces and throw them in the freezer.
